Collaborating to offer Sonar, Underwater Sound, and Undersea Systems Training
UTIC has partnered with RTX and the University of Rhode Island to again offer the course, Principles of Sonar, Underwater Sound and Undersea Systems.
The non-credit course will be offered as virtual live sessions on Zoom. Lectures will be offered during the 2025 Spring Semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00-6:15 PM (ET). The first lecture will be on Thursday, 23 January 2025. Spring Break will be 9 – 15 March 2025. The final lecture will be held on 29 April 2025. There is no cost to UTIC member company employees for the non-credit course.
The non-credit training course and URI graduate credit course are identical except for the graded homework and exams. This course is structured with the first four lectures providing an introduction and summary of the complete course. This structure provides a “short” training course suitable for managers and business staff plus a semester long an in-depth training course for engineers and scientists.
Recorded Lectures: All recorded live lectures and PowerPoint lecture files for this course will be available on URI’s Brightspace and a Google Drive.
Text: Urick, J.R., Principles of Underwater Sound, Peninsula Publishing, 3rd Edition, 1983. (optional). Other useful references will be noted in the first lecture and with each lecture.
The course begins with a high-level introduction to sonar systems and then walks through the scientific principles governing sonar, explanation of the sonar equation for active sonar, passive sonar, and acoustic communication, and underwater sound, its propagation, its transduction, and undersea noise. Each term in the sonar equation is addressed. The latter part of the course covers sonar system design, tradeoffs, and optimizing systems to solve specific problems in detection and classification.
The genesis of the training comes from Dr. John Short, a renowned sonar technology expert, who previously was the Undersea Systems Technical Director at Raytheon Technologies and a Department of Navy Senior Executive at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport. Dr. Short sees this effort as an important knowledge transfer opportunity for the current and future workforce.
