The Drivers of Innovation in Naval Defense Tech Talk provides a common operating picture of drivers of innovation in naval defense, reviewing recent U.S. policy guidance, regional/global atmospherics, peer competitor shipbuilding and activity, undersea cable and cyber threats, and the changing character of war, all tied to the need for deterrence and naval power projection.
This program was delivered by Gloria Berlanga, the Vice President for Defense Business Development at Rhode Island Commerce and a retired U.S. Army National Guard Colonel with more than 30 years of senior leadership experience.

UTIC Tech Talk: Historical Evolutions of Underwater Technologies
This two-session program traces the evolution of undersea technology — from early diving bells and experimental submarines to today’s advanced unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). It examines key advances in materials, propulsion, communications, and sensing, and shows how these building blocks converged into landmark vehicles that defined modern subsea operations. The Tech Talk highlights how historical innovations continue to shape engineering tradeoffs and system design across defense, research, and commercial applications.

This two-session UTIC Tech Talk provides a practical overview of the sensors and tool suites used on AUVs, USVs, and ROVs. The sessions examined how mission needs—like offshore wind, infrastructure inspection, defense applications and environmental monitoring—shape sensor integration and system design in ocean and undersea operations.
